English composer and pianist John Ireland (1879-1962) composed this short work on Christmas Day 1913 for a collection of 4 Piano Preludes. It has become one of his most beloved works, played by organists, string ensembles and vocalists. A hymn text has been added:
“Lowly, laid in a manger,
with oxen brooding nigh,
The Heav’nly Babe is lying
His Maiden Mother by…”
The composition’s lilting rhythm, graceful melody and warm harmonies makes it a perfect piece to be added to Christmas repertoire for solo harp. Arrangements by Janet Witman.
