Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1994) composed this iconic work for piano and orchestra in 1934 while he was living in Switzerland. His Rhapsody is based on a melody by 19th century violin virtuoso Niccolo Paganini. Rachmaninoff composed 24 variations- the 18th Variation is often isolated and performed as a piano solo.
