Gymnopedie no.1 by Eric Satie
Harp Solo (Pedal). 2 Pages.
Eric Satie was a French composer and pianist. He composed a 3 piece collection in 1888 for solo piano and titled it Gymnopedie no. 1-3. The odd title reflects his esoteric personality. It derives from Greek and translates “naked youth”, as in an ancient dance festival. He was known for his sarcasm, as this work is slow, meandering and rather mournful. Janet has arranged it for harp solo, adding harpistic nuances and her own variation! Satie called it “furniture music”- it has no real purpose and it started a new genre of jazz chords and tonalities which many French composers (Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc) used in their compositions. This piece is great for teaching and a “must-have” in a professional harpist’s set list! Arrangements by Janet Witman.
