The Brandywine Harp Orchestra

The Brandywine Harp Orchestra was organized in 2000 by Janet Witman, winner of the U.S. National Scottish Harp Championship and All Eastern Open Clarsach Championship. Janet has been teaching and performing on celtic and classical harps in the Brandywine Valley of Southeastern Pennsylvania since 1984. She is a graduate of the esteemed Curtis Institute of Music. Inspired by the Belfast Harp Orchestra of Ireland, and Na Clarsairean of Scotland, Janet returned from the 2000 Edinburgh Harp Festival in Scotland with the desire to form a harp orchestra in the United States.

The Brandywine Harp Orchestra consists of sixteen celtic harpers of diverse ages with advanced harp skills and extensive musical backgrounds, and has become an outstanding performing ensemble. They have delighted audiences with their concerts at Longwood Gardens, Mt Gretna Tabernacle, Winterthur Gardens, The American Harp Society Philadelphia Conference, and over forty church concert series.

Janet's dream of establishing a harp orchestra will come full circle in April '09, when Brandywine Harps will be the first American celtic harp orchestra to perform at the International Harp Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
